I feel very lucky living in Florence, mostly because of the proximity of the bike path to my house. For the past 11 years, I have been able to walk my dog twice a day on that bike path, where we both enjoyed exercising as well as our encounters with other walkers and their dogs.

But we weren’t so lucky on May 10. That day, my 15-pound, 13-year-old rescue dog Romeo was attacked by a pit bull in the bike lane. Three days later, after spending $ 2,500 at the Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Hospital in South Deerfield to try to save Romeo’s life, he died of his injuries.

At the time of the attack, the pit bull owner was not yet fully aware of what had happened to his dog; he enjoyed talking on the cellphone. In this lies the problem; it can be difficult to anticipate any dog reaction to another dog (or to a small, fast-moving child) and therefore it is imperative that dog owners are fully aware of their dogs ’tendencies and proclivities to all the time in public.

I urge dog owners to know their dogs ’behaviors in a realistic and community-focused way. A dog is more than a fashion accessory; it can easily become a deadly weapon. It is the responsibility of every dog owner to keep their dog under their control so that everyone (whether cat or human) can enjoy their time on the bike path.
