Airbnb Introduces Split Stays, Search Categories, and Travel Cover

Airbnb has launched the biggest update in a decade, inviting users to discover millions more homes, split trips between the two locations, and stay protected by free cover.

For good or bad, the COVID-19 pandemic is changing the way we live, work, and travel. Airbnb is reacting to that with some new features in a bid to entice us to vacation longer and to more destinations.

Airbnb Categories

Airbnb Categories

Instead of relying on your worldly knowledge (or lack thereof) to find your next vacation destination, Airbnb introduces 56 categories organized by home style, location, or proximity to a travel activity. . Your search can be found based on preferences such as unique scenery, beds and breakfasts, creative spaces, historic houses, iconic cities, off-the-grid, or small houses.

“Airbnb Categories organize homes by what makes them unique, helping people discover places they might not otherwise be able to find,” the Airbnb blog explains.(Opens in new window). “It will help alleviate excess tourism by redistributing travel to new locations beyond the same popular destinations.”

Split Stays

Airbnb Split Stays

Airbnb created Split Stays to allow users to easily split their trips between two locations.

Aimed at encouraging people to “stay in two destinations as part of a longer trip,” the option can be found in destination -specific searches, as well as in 14 categories such as camping, skiing, and surfing. When browsing national parks, for example, Split Stays might suggest a pair of homes in Zion National Park and the Grand Canyon — about 110 miles away.

“When looking at Split Stays on a map, an animated line visually connects the two houses to show you the distance between them and the sequence of stays,” Airbnb explains. “Once you choose Split Stay, you’re guided by an easy-to-use interface to book every stay, one house at a time.”
