In Tennessee, Ryan Tannehill says it not his job of mentoring the young quarterback behind him. In Kansas City, back in 2017, it wasn’t Alex Smith’s job either. But he did it too. That’s what Chiefs coach Andy Reid Colin Cowherd told Fox Sports on Tuesday when asked if a veteran QB has the appointment of his potential successor, calling Smith “the biggest something that happened to Pat Mahomes. “

Smith, who is now retired, was the Chiefs ’starting QB in 2017, just before his third playoff appearance in four years, when Kansas City traded draft Mahomes in the first round. Reid insisted the veteran he didn’t have to worry about helping Mahomes move to the NFL, the coach said, but Smith accepted the coaching opportunity.

“I told Alex,‘ Man, go and find the biggest year you’ve ever had, and you don’t have to teach Pat, ’” Reid told Cowherd. “‘We’re here to do that as coaches. You’re out there to make and win games and do the best you can for your team.’ And so that’s the way we approached it with him.Now Alex, naturally, though, is the biggest thing that has happened since Pat Mahomes … Alex brings Patrick into his world without being forced ( to) it … worked out (perfectly) .I don’t have to say a whole lot other than, ‘You play and win games, we win a championship, and do the best you can to quarterback position. ‘”

Mahomes, of course, spent most of his time as a rookie on the bench, before taking over as the Chiefs starter in 2018, when he exploded on the scene with 50 touchdown passes and NFL MVP honors.

Tannehill, who is still starting for the Titans, got some public criticism after Tennessee used a third-round pick on Liberty QB Malik Willis this April. While the 33-year-old veteran said he hopes Willis can learn from him, he has stated that he will not be forced to appoint his new teammate.
