Castlewood business details their experience after tornado struck community

SIOUX FALLS, SD (Dakota News Now) – After a tornado hit Castlewood Thursday night, the city woke up to widespread damage.

Damage from the tornado can be seen in and around the community. Falling trees, shattered roofs, and fallen power lines are strewn across the town.

Early Friday morning, you’ll find a line of residents waiting outside the town waiting to re-enter town. You’ll also find a small gas station called Cat’s Corner Convenience owned by Melissa and Cat Rhody, who have lived in and around Castlewood their entire lives.

“It’s a wonderful community. We are always there for each other, working with each other, doing what we can for neighbors, friends, and family, ”Melissa said.

Melissa and Cat were at their home on Lake Poinsett when they heard of the storm.

“We had no idea what we were going to ride when we got to town last night,” Melissa said.

Their store is one of the lucky buildings, not damaged by the tornado, but there is still work to be done.

“We try and do everything we can to help those who need it,” Melissa said

Rebuilding the city is a long process.

“It’s going to take time, but we’re Castlewood Strong, and we’re going to finish it together,” Melissa said.
