Drew Brees says he ‘may play football again:’ Former Saints QB is ‘currently undecided’ on his future

New Orleans Saints legend Drew Brees hung up his cleats in March and accepted a job as an analyst at NBC. This weekend, the New York Post reported that Brees will no longer work for NBC in 2022, leading the former quarterback to go on Twitter and discuss his future. Even if he said the reports were inaccurate, he added that a return to the farm was a possibility.

“Despite speculation from the media about my future this fall, so far I have not decided,” Brees tweeted. “I can work at NBC, I can play football again, I can focus on business and philanthropy, I can train for pickleball tours, senior golf tours, coach my kids or all of the above. I’m with you. “

Monday morning, the Saints ’new head coach Dennis Allen was asked about Brees’ tweet, and he said he believed the comment was made in ridicule.

“My wife told me about it because I didn’t follow social media,” Allen said, by WDSU. “So I thought, ‘Well that’s interesting. That’ll bring up some questions tomorrow at the golf tournament.’ Yes, but sure, I think it was a comment made in mockery and I’m sure we didn’t have any conversation about that.

If we take Brees ’comments on the return of football seriously, we should do the same for his thoughts on joining the pickleball tour. The 43-year-old certainly misses playing football, but where will he play when he returns? The Saints signed Jameis Winston to a multi-year extension this offseason, signed Andy Dalton to serve as his backup and Taysom Hill and Ian Book are still on the roster as well. Will Brees come back wearing a different uniform?

It’s hard to say whether Brees is serious about a potential return to football, but now that he brings it up in his tweet, questions will continue to be asked. If he returns to the field, Brees is probably best suited to wait until a spot opens in mid -season.

When Brees announced his retirement last year, he did so as the NFL’s all-time leader in career passing yards, completions and completion percentage. He has five All-Pro awards to his name, two Offensive Player of the Year awards and an MVP from Super Bowl XLIV.
