If you forget the passcode on your iPhone and you can’t access your device, it’s possible to reset the device and turn it on again. There is a way to reboot your iPhone, assuming you have a backed up handset and you have access to a computer, either a PC or a Mac.

There are two options here what you can do with the device, if you backup it you can restore the backup. If you have not backed it up then you can set up the handset as a new device.

All you have to do is put your iPhone in recovery mode, you need a PC or Mac to do this so you can connect your iPhone to your computer.

How do I put my iPhone in recovery mode?

To put your iPhone in recovery mode you need to turn off the device, the way you do this depends on what type of device you have.

To turn off the iPhone 8 handset or later then press the power button and the volume down button at the same time. You will see then slide to turn off and you can turn off the handset.

On iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 6 you need to hold down the power button until you can see slide to turn off.

On older devices like the first generation iPhone Se and the iPhone 5S and earlier, you have to press the power button at the top until you see the slide to power off.

You now need to put your iPhone in recovery mode, the way to do this will vary by model, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X and later, including iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation) it is made of side button.

On the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus it is made of Volume down button. On older devices like the iPhone SE and the iPhone 6S and earlier, you need to use the home button.

To put your iPhone in recovery mode you need to press and hold the relevant button at the top, and then connect it to your computer, while keeping your finger on the button. You need to hold down the button until you see the recovery mode on the display of your iPhone. If you see the passcode on your screen you need to turn it off and start again.

How do I get my iPhone back?

Now that your iPhone is in recovery mode you can restore the device, it can be through iTunes or through the Finder on your Mac or iTunes on the PC.

Show you a menu on your computer screen with Update, Restore or Cancel, you want to select Restore in the menu. This will restore your device which usually takes about 15 minutes.
