PARIS (AP) – The Latest French Open Grand Slam tennis tournament (all time local):
Martina Trevisan of Italy reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros for the second time in three games.
59th-ranked Trevisan grabbed the last four games and defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-6 (10), 7-5 on Sunday.
Sasnovich served for the second set at 5-3 but broke in love there, part of the stretch in which Trevisan collected 13 of 15 points.
Trevisan won his first WTA title in Rabat a week before the start of the French Open and is now on nine consecutive wins. Eight of those wins came in straight sets.
He was a qualifier to be ranked 159th in 2020 when he made a staggering run in the quarterfinals of the French Open before losing that stage to champion Iga Swiatek. This time, Trevisan will face Leylah Fernandez or Amanda Anisimova for the semifinal spot.
Trevisan lost in the first or second round of six more Grand Slam appearances.
47th-ranked Sasnovich defeated major champions Angelique Kerber and Emma Raducanu to reach the fourth round in Paris.
Sasnovich has never made it to the quarterfinals of 28 career major tournaments.
The fourth round of action at Roland Garros kicked off on the coldest day of the tournament to date, with a temperature of 55 degrees Fahrenheit (13 Celsius).
Five American women entered the round of 16 of the clay-court Grand Slam tournament for the first time since 2003, and three were in action on Sunday.
Amanda Anisimova, a 2019 Paris semifinalist at the age of 17, played for 2021 U.S. Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez on Court Philippe Chatrier. The match was followed by Coco Gauff-at the age of 18, she was the youngest girl left in the draw-against 31st-seeded Elise Mertens of Belgium. And 2017 U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens meets 23rd-seeded Jil Teichmann of Switzerland at Court Suzanne Lenglen.
Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are set to play in their fourth round on the next day. If 13 -time French Open champion Nadal can beat No. 9 Felix Auger-Aliassime, and defending champion Djokovic can beat No. 15 Diego Schwartzman, the owners of a combined 41 major titles will face each other in the quarterfinals.
That was the 59th bout between Djokovic and Nadal, extending their record for the most encounters between any two men in professional tennis.
