Pamela Perrine has been making short films since she moved to Watkinsville about six years ago, and now her latest effort is now available for public viewing on YouTube.
“The Journeyman,” directed and written by Perrine, has previously been screened at four film festivals.
One of the reasons he wanted to use the short film was because May is national Mental Health Awareness Month.
The film “talks about childhood trauma and unbelief, which is one of the problems of mental health – how patients don’t believe and how they are misdiagnosed,” he said.
“The Journeyman” stars Jay Mohr, who has been an actor since 1992 and has had roles in movies such as “Jerry Maguire” and the television series “The Cleaning Lady.”
“I know Jay Mohr and I want to use his amazing acting skills,” Perrine said.
The 11 1/2-minute film was reviewed by Indie Shorts Magazine:
“Pamela Perrine’s Journeyman is a layered social drama that brings discussions of mental health, social rehabilitation and childhood traumas into a tight, double narrative. However, if you think the film can be divided in one of the many stories that talk about mental health, you can’t be more wrong. At its core, The Journeyman is about love, compassion and maybe even a silent message sent to everyone who doesn’t hear the voices , ”Said the reviewer.
“All my films are mostly about moral problems and family drama. I included mental health in one of them because I felt it was important – because it was ignored,” Perrine said.
The film was premiered by Hollywood at the Chinese Film Festival, then received at the Chelsea Film Festival in New York, the Vail Film Festival in Colorado and the Portland Film Festival, the latter screening films from around the world.
Also available on YouTube is a short film that Perrine shot in Watkinsville in 2018 called “Angels at Rocket Field.” Many of the scenes were filmed at the actual Rocket Field downtown.
Perrine, who is from the Macon area, began an acting career in 1991 and lived in California and New York before she moved to Watkinsville. He plans to direct a full-length feature film.
Another short film he has directed and has an acting role in was released in 2020.
“Dinner Time with the President,” he says, his favorite short film. It was received at an Academy Award-qualified film festival and was well received.
“It’s very powerful,” he said.
“Ultimately it refers to Abraham Zapruder, who filmed the JFK assassination,” the director said.
