Famous last words? Well, for the benefit of the travel industry from this brutal era, we hope not!

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky was in New York City on Tuesday for the launch of the company’s new curated search and homepage/app, their biggest product update in a while. Aside from the very encouraging message of this radical change in its product and Chesky’s happy message throughout the past year of travel going through a post pandemic revolution, he also doesn’t see a recession coming to travel.

I asked him about the technology disruptions happening around him, common fears of a recession to come and its impact on the travel sector that has since been the most hit it has been due to the pandemic. He thinks travel won’t go through a bigger setback, summer can be a blockbuster and he thinks travel has become an aspirational thing, there is so much hidden need that people really want to travel no matter what, even if their budgets change. He said their new curated search makes it more possible to cater to all price points and budgets.

I asked him about Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi’s memo earlier this week to her team about hiring a freeze and whether she would see any hiring freeze coming for Airbnb anytime soon. He is strong: no. He says people never realize how cost -effective Airbnb is with only about 5,000 employees for a company with billions in revenue – and $ 2.5 billion in free cash flow in the last 12 months. . If anything it has seen a huge increase in interest in working for the company since it announced its new policy of going permanently remote earlier this month.
