Killingly community continues fight for mental health services

KILLINGLY, Conn. (WFSB) – The Killingly community continues to fight for mental health services.

Dozens showed up at a Board of Education (BOE) meeting in an effort to push the board to discuss mental health options at Killingly High School.

This comes after the board rejected a plan to increase the school’s mental health in March.

The topic wasn’t even on the agenda tonight but several community members showed up hoping to push the board for answers. They even arrived before the meeting and held a rally outside the town hall.

Students, parents and teachers lined up at Killingly Green, hoping their voices would be heard.

Jenelle Provencher said, “we will continue to show and fight for these children and their voices and the supports they need.”

The bereaved parents say mental health problems are plaguing the town.

A November survey showed that nearly 15% of middle and high school students who responded had made a suicide plan.

High School Senior Julianna Morrissette said, “my freshman year and before high school I struggled with depression and anxiety. I was able to get help outside of school, but it also hurt my parents.”

Morrissette said she thinks having mental health services on school property can help those without access outside of school.

From the sea of green to supporting school mental health services, someone opposed the idea.

Jasmine Berti says she thinks children shouldn’t get mental health support without a parent’s permission.

“Parents need to be more involved with their children in all aspects,” says Berti.

At the board meeting tonight, mental health services were not on the agenda. There was a vote to open the topic for a discussion, but it was rejected.

Christine Rosati Randal said, “every day that passes, that they stop it, our students are in crisis. And I feel like they are playing political football on the health and safety of our student, to say they are not us given an explanation if not.

The next Killingly BOE meeting is on May 25th.
