Meet South Africa’s Next Generation Of Fashion Designers

South African designers are making waves in the fashion industry and this is just the beginning. Designer Thebe Magugu, an LVMH Prize winner; Rich Mnisi, who has partnered with Adidas; and Lukhanyo Mdingi, 2021 Karl Lagerfeld Prize, shows that South African designers are replacing the global fashion scene.

The latest South African Fashion Week introduces us to a new group of designers who are on their way to taking over the industry.

Here are 4 South African designers following the trend:

Thando Ntuli recently won Talent Search 2022 at South African Fashion Week for his brand MUNKUS. She said, “I want to design for a unique and wider age group as then and now has influenced me. The look of the collection has layered pieces that allow every woman to wear it. the way they want and add their twist to it.

The South African luxury brand was influenced by South African fashion in the 80s and 90s. This website says, “A link home and a chance to be bold, a brand that lies between casual and formal.”

MUNKUS offers ready-to-wear collections to wear on any occasion.

This sibling duo is making waves with their brand, SUHO ORIGINAL among the cool kids of South Africa. The Kondleka brothers shared a statement, “We built the brand in the first moments of the pandemic when the country was completely locked in. You can’t travel, you can’t go for a coffee date. We want to to make the right pieces for our return to those times, clothes you can rock in Durban or Bali.

The Kondleka brothers ’designs were influenced by work clothes, with two-piece overalls and well-arranged pieces.

Showcased most recently at South Africa Fashion Week 2022, Ntando Ngwenya’s brand Ntando XV “offers artisanal clothing, with an unusual design.”

Ntando aims to transform the industry by combining conservative and postmodern techniques. He puts a contemporary twist on traditional methods. The designer’s love for fashion began at an early age and she loves working on “cutting experiments, pattern engineering, unusually intricate finishes, cared for items, and controlled fits.”

Kayla Stamboul is the Creative Director and Founder of womenswear brand Kayla Stam. She is inspired by her mother’s sense of fashion and hopes to inspire women of all ages through style.

Kayla’s designs are contemporary and perfect for corporate women who want to look together, but chic.
