AUSTIN, Texas – Millions of Americans are expected to travel by land and air this week on Memorial Day. The AAA estimates that 39 million people will travel for the holiday.
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) hopes to have the poorest Memorial Day travel time in airport history. Memorial Day Weekend traditionally announces the start of summer travel, but the AUS daily number of passengers has already increased.
Last summer, the highest travel days in AUS were Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays, and Mondays, usually before 8 p.m.
AUS offers some tips for passengers for this weekend and the upcoming summer travel season:
When to arrive in AUS
To help manage summer travel via AUS, passengers using general security must arrive at least two and a half hours before boarding domestic flights and three hours before boarding international trips, regardless of the day of the week or time of day their flight is scheduled.
Travelers must budget more time if they need to check luggage, return a rented vehicle, or complete other activities before joining security screening lines. First-time flyers, travelers who haven’t flown in years, large groups, and those traveling with small children should also give themselves more time.
Prepare for TSA screening and packaging properly
Security screening checkpoints are open at 3 am TSA PreCheck and Clear screening is available at Checkpoints 1 and 2 West. All four checkpoints lead to all gates and airlines at Barbara Jordan Terminal.
TSA security delays can occur if passengers accidentally pack prohibited items in their carry -on luggage. To help avoid delays, passengers should review what they can and cannot do through TSA.gov security.
Parking and or drop off passengers
The increase in travelers means more vehicles in AUS. Drivers dropping off passengers can use the high level for departure or the low level for arrival to relieve congestion. Passengers who fall to the lower level can easily climb to the top of the ticketing and security using escalators and elevators. If the lower level is crowded, incoming passengers can use escalators and elevators to get to the higher level.
Travelers looking to park onsite can visit ABIAParking.com to reserve a parking space and check if there is real-time parking before arriving at the airport.
Uber, Lyft, Wingz, or other rideshares use the tram service located on the first floor of the Red garage to take passengers to the rideshare pick-up area located on the ground floor below the pick-up facility. car rental.
Check your flight
Travelers without checked baggage can skip ticket counters and immediately go to TSA screening checkpoints using these time-saving flight check-in options:
- Use the lower curbside and upper curbside for drop-off-from the lower level, passengers can easily climb high to ticketing and security via escalators and elevators.
- Self-service flight check-in kiosk that allows travelers to print their boarding passes and bag tags is inside the terminal, opposite the airline ticket counters.
- In addition to traditional check-in methods, some airlines offer outside curbside check-in at a high level.
- Travelers can also save by checking in for their flight using their airlines ’mobile app and a mobile boarding pass.
Get the most out of AUS
Already inside the terminal, travelers can explore new art installations, concession offerings, live music stage, and more using a series of directions on the AUS digital wayfinding map at AirportMaps.AustinTexas.gov.
While airport restaurant hours may vary with the concession company’s pending staff level, AUS is investing in new self-service kiosks that will be available 24/7 for passengers to purchase snacks, drinks, and travel necessities, including made and delivered daily Sprinkles Cupcakes.
