Our Chicago: Tips for summer 2022 travel about finding flights to Rome, Italy and when to visit Portugal

CHICAGO (WLS) – In the past two years, many Americans have limited their travel. But that seems to be changing as the summer of 2022 approaches.

This holiday weekend, Triple A predicted that nearly 1.9 million people in Illinois would travel 50 miles or more from home.

Debbie Haas, vice president of travel for AAA, said the summer travel season is almost at a “sizzlin ‘start.” He said the excitement to travel was highest during the pandemic.

At the same time, gas prices are flying around $ 5.00 or more.

“We see that people need to save on their travels,” Haas said. “Some stay closer to home or shorten their trips and they look for ways to save.”

For flyers, planning is the key Haas said.

“And think of things that can make flying less of a problem for you. So one option is to try to take a direct flight. I’d like to consider taking the first flight of the day because that gives them. the night before to arrive and get your plane where you want, ”Haas said.

Our Chicago: Part 2

Ja’Vonne Harley is the owner of Advantage International and host of the radio program “Traveling Culturati.” While he was based in Chicago, he spoke to us from Rome where he was with a group. Harley said she has heard so many American accents that the flight to Rome is completely full. The trip worked for a long time.

“Those who book early get very good fares and our group airfare is set at a specific price,” Harley said. “For those who are late during the last month of travel, plane fares have doubled. That’s why it’s very important to book in advance. Summer fares will definitely go up.”

Both Haas and Harley recommend travel insurance which points out that if you travel internationally you will need to do a negative Covid test to get back. And if you can’t, insurance can help cover any additional costs you may incur. And an international travel destination they want this year: Portugal. They cited its affordability and Haas called it an “amazing place to visit.”
