Road closure to impact College Station travel for six weeks

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) -Commuters using a major College Station road should find an alternative route in the next six weeks.

FM 2154 (Wellborn Road) on Holleman Drive will be closed beginning Sunday, May 15, at about 5:00 p.m., and will remain closed for approximately 6 weeks.

TxDot says the closure is necessary to raise the elevation of Wellborn Road to the elevation of adjacent railroad tracks to improve the intersection of all traffic to and from Holleman Drive west of Wellborn Road.

Due to the current difference in elevations between the railroad tracks and FM 2154, drivers may experience dragging the front or rear end of their vehicles when passing through this intersection. But most of all, school buses and emergency response vehicles, like fire trucks, have a hard time making it safe across the rails.

This project will eliminate that issue and make the drive smoother for everyone. Even if it is inconvenient for drivers, turns on local adjacent town and state roads are signed to help drivers on other routes at this time and TxDOT hopes the opening progress will make it temporary. discomfort that is less worrying.

Officials say access to nearby businesses (CC Creations and CubeSmart Self Storage), the Berkely House and Gateway Apartments, First United Methodist Church, and the Wayne Smith Athletic Complex, all surround this intersection , will still be provided at the time of intersection closure. But no other traffic will be allowed to pass through those points and into the construction area. Everyone through traffic must use a detour route.

TxDot officials say FM 2154 (Wellborn Road) is expected to reopen to traffic in late June. Holleman Drive east of Wellborn Road will remain closed until late July. Holleman Drive west of Wellborn Road will remain closed until the Union Pacific Railroad is able to complete new railroad construction and upgrade the crossing safety device. Once that work is completed and the TxDOT contractor can complete the Holleman road and pedestrian elements that tie the rails, the Holleman west will also be opened. The entire project is expected to be completed in late September, depending on the railroad’s coordination efforts.
