 Softball Eliminated by Babson in NCAA Regional Action


Score in Box 1 GENESEUS, NY (May 14, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team earned their first NCAA win in program history with a 4-0 win over No. 19 SUNY Geneseo in their first game of the day. They fell 9-3 in the playoffs to No. 19 Babson and was eliminated from NCAA Regional play.

It was an impressive 2022 campaign for the Ducks where they won their second consecutive MAC Freedom title. The year ended with a 19-19 record. Geneseo finished the season 34-5 and Babson improved to 37-9.

Fifth year Siobhan Cottell Stevens led with a combined four hits in two games, 2 for 3 in two games. He also has an RBI. Sophomore Madison Kidd there were three hits combined and there were also two RBIs. Graduate student Amanda Delorme also solid on the plate, 3 for 6.

The elimination was on the line in the first game of the day for the Ducks. Stevens took control early in the game and never looked back. Cottell stayed hot on the plate and got the Ducks on board with a double on left field at the bottom of the first for an early 1-0 lead. Delorme drove another run in the second with one on the right field and Stevens led 2-0.

Junior Alex Schoellig and Kidd each drove a run in the fourth and fifth inning, respectively, to make the score 4-0. First year Kaitlin Smith (9-9) made a complete game shutout from the circle for his ninth win of the season. Sophomore Lauren Kersch (15-2) was honored with the loss for the Knights.

The match was repetitive as Stevens and Babson looked to avoid elimination and advance to the third and final day of the match. Sophomore Chloe Joslin took home to give the Beavers an early 1-0 lead at the top of the second. Kidd answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning and the game was tied at 1-1.

In the next inning, Babson drove another run on a triple to right field and Stevens quickly responded again in the second half of the inning. Sophomore Jessica Guerrero doubled on the right field to take Delorme home and tie the game 2-2. Once again, Babson replied. This time the Beavers scored twice in a single from junior Lexi Morris and the Ducks chased down 4-2.

Stevens finally cut the lead in the sixth inning. Cottell doubled at the start of the inning and was replaced in the junior second Elise Fauske who quickly stole the third. He scored next at bat in the first year ema ruiz grounded out in the second and the score was 4-3.

Babson added five runs in the seventh to end the game and win 9-3. Sophomore Moira O’Reilly (21-5) was honored with the win, scoring six and dropping just one run in four and two-thirds of innings. Junior Erin looked around (9-9) received the loss for Stevens

Next: The loss ended the 2022 season for the Ducks. They will seek to build and promote an impressive campaign this year.
