The washing machine and tumble dryer were one of the worst offenders, returning users 75p per hour for each appliance. And with some cycles lasting up to three hours, that’s a huge amount.
Food banks recently reported energy costs were so high that people wanted parcels with stuffed things they didn’t have to cook.
But our statistics from the Center For Sustainable Energy show using the grill and hob can be as little as 4p in ten minutes, making it one of the most powerful energy uses.
Families can trade to save money, such as hanging laundry to dry and washing by hand.

Squeeze team expert Martyn James says: “There’s no need to make a lot of lifestyle changes in 2022.
“But sometimes adapting to new ways can save money and be beneficial.
“Right now the most expensive items in your home are ‘wet’ appliances – such as washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers.
“The last two you can leave out completely.”
Martyn also advised to just use the washing machine fully loaded and press the eco button.
He added: “Refrigerators and freezers are the next worst offenders.
“I don’t like to say it, but microwaves are cheaper than cookers.”
