 UPIKE announces new sports complex

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WSAZ) – The University of Pikeville has announced an agreement to purchase 220 acres of land, to one day house all of its outdoor athletic facilities.

“You can never determine the opportunity it will provide for us. In recruiting, just word the people who call and the interest of the people who say. ‘It’s really exciting’ and we’re really excited about our university as a whole, but it adds another layer of excitement to where we’re going and the trajectory of our campus, ”said Kelly Wells, UPIKE’s athletic director.

The property, now known as Bear Mountain, will be home to football, soccer, tennis, cross country, track and field, archery, softball and baseball, in addition to UPIKE athletic programs.

The property is located on top of a hill on Cedar Creek Road in Pikeville, less than 2 miles away from campus.

“Having all of this on one site can change the terms of the amount of coverage we get. The amount of help that comes in one place just disappears from the charts for us,” Wells said.

Over the years, the university has partnered with the city, using facilities throughout the town, such as the football team that shares a field at Pikeville High School.

“Bear Mountain will give us a chance to change the whole dynamic of what football and baseball and softball, tennis, soccer and everything look like for us,” Wells said.

Wells said this project is a big selling point for recruitment, and he already sees students and coaches excited about what it will bring.

“It’s a nice change from sharing a field at Pikeville High School,” said future freshman football player Parker Preece. “I want to be a part of it playing on a beautiful new field.”

Preece is excited to see the university invest in improving athletics.

“I think it will definitely bring a new wave to the University of Pikeville, and hopefully there will be guys from everywhere, and we hope to win a couple championships,” he said.

He said it’s not just a place for student -athletes and their families, he hopes it will appeal to the community, as well as plans to include an area for tailgating, playgrounds and walking and cycling trails.

“We want that to be the place that people go. We’re very proud of the traditions that are here. It’s a new tradition,” Wells said. “We want people to get used to traveling there riding on their bikes there. That’s probably the sailing spot, who knows? This is a great opportunity for us to give back to a community that has always given to us. ”

So far, the university has not announced the timeline when the complex will open.
