The first Coach ambassador for South Korea, Yoon Chan-young, talks about the brand’s history, his widespread praise since Netflix’s ‘All of Us Are Dead’, and dressing up to express his true self .
With every major breakthrough K-drama series comes a single international star: enter Yoon Chan-young from the Netflix hit ‘All of Us Are Dead’, a zombie apocalypse thriller immersed in his teeth of viewers around the world. Recently, the 21-year-old was named Coach’s first brand ambassador for South Korea, joining the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Michael B. Jordan, Jeremy Lin and Köki as a face of the worldwide Coach family.
“At first I was very surprised to hear about Coach’s history,” Chan-young said of the brand. “I see that there are a lot of different kinds of things that Coach offers to people. So, I think it would make sense for me to continue this legacy, and continue to look at Coach’s fashion brand.
For Coach’s Spring 2022 collection, the pieces can be summed up in three words: colorful, vibrant and vibrant. The line features a variety of motifs, from denim to floral and bright, bold colors that are likely to show off spring and smoothly overtake summer. Rocking these motifs, Chan-young made her campaign debut for the brand’s Spring 2022 ready-to-wear, which also features the Hitch backpack-an accessory that pays homage to Coach’s rich legacy .
Chan-young shares with her, fashion is a way to tell a story. Appropriately then, that as an actor whose roles vary in need, Chan-young channels the characters she plays and their personalities through the clothing she wears. For her, fashion is not just clothes. It’s a way of revealing parts of himself to the world – a way to tell people how he really feels, without words.
“The dress and its styles are very helpful in representing and expressing character,” Chan-young explains. “So, I always remember what I’m wearing, and I try to link that to the character I’m playing in any given role.”
Between celebrating her late birthday and teaching her the Malay word for ‘thank you’, we caught up with Chan-young about Coach, fashion nostalgia and its future, and what it takes to be ‘Oppa’ today. time.
What was your very first Coach experience?
When I was in elementary school, my mom had a Coach bag. So, this is my first impression of Coach. Coach is not an unfamiliar brand to me. But I can say that it was my first accurate encounter with Coach as I had just finished shooting “All of Us Are Dead”. I received a leather bag from Coach, as a gift – and that was the first Coach personal item I had.
What’s your favorite piece from Coach right now, and why?
I have a worn T-shirt that I really like. It was a black T-shirt with a rabbit design, and I wore it for a photo shoot for it. [Spring 2022] collection. It’s so beautiful, and the best part is that it’s also made from organic cotton. So, not only does it have a good design, but it is good for the planet. From the moment I saw it, I thought, “Oh, this is for me!”
Can you share with us about your personal relationship with fashion, and how it has changed your career so far?
Ever since I was in high school, I’ve really enjoyed looking at different types of clothing. Then, when I was training to be an artist-of course, I had to train more-I preferred a more ‘comfortable’ look. The ‘overfit’ outfits and the ‘street’ look are what I like to wear. For example, when I go to a party, I wear a shirt and a tie. I just enjoy looking at different fashion styles and studying them. And it’s something I want to continue, with Coach especially – to keep looking at all the different styles.
What are some of the ways that Coach’s brand philosophy aligns with your own personal values? In other words, what do you and Coach have in common?
The purpose of the coach’s brand is the courage to be real. This is definitely in line with one of my own personal beliefs and values, so that there is a certain energy that comes out of reality – your ‘real’ you, your natural self. So, that’s one thing.
Another of Coach’s brand values is ‘think what if’. It really inspires curiosity, and at the same time, it’s an amount that promotes diversity. So, I think these kinds of Coach beliefs and values are some of the communities I see myself in this brand.
You are the first South Korean to become an ambassador for Coach. How do you see the brand uniting your personal culture or values in the future?
Coach is a global brand with a long history and heritage. It has luxury items that have its own deep tradition roots, but at the same time it has trendy items, as if it has partnered with other brands to customize. So, I think you can combine the two, and one of the roles I play is to do that. I want to combine the two and promote it, so that people from all backgrounds-young and old-can enjoy it and learn more about it. I think the younger generation, like myself, can really help foster this diversity as well in my support. If I can do that, I think it will be useful.
How would you describe your personal style so far versus the characters you’ve played so far?
I personally believe that fashion represents and expresses a person’s lifestyle and emotions. So, I think that trend can help me express my ‘color’. There is a Korean saying ‘clothing gives you wings’. This means that depending on what you wear, you can look more beautiful as it helps you express yourself. Whether it’s personal life or with my characters, style really helps bring out those personalities. So, I always pay attention and think about what I’m wearing, and then use that to connect with the character I’m playing.
Surely you’ve been famous ever since Netflix’s “All of Us Are Dead”. How do you feel about gaining wider praise and publicity after the show’s worldwide success?
I have received a lot of attention and love since I expressed myself in that role, and I am so grateful for that. I feel so good about myself. I also became more confident in terms of the next steps I wanted to take, and in terms of what I said and my actions. But at the same time, I felt a greater responsibility. So, I told myself that in order for me not to be pressured about all this, I had to make an effort and try.
Last but not least, what are some of the latest do’s and don’ts to be an ‘Oppa’?
I think being an ‘Oppa’ has something to do with how you look. I mean, the way you look on the outside-you have to be neat and tidy. You need to bathe regularly, and you need to wash your face. Wearing perfume is also a nice touch, but the most important of all of it is that you don’t have to put on this style all the time. It’s only when you meet someone special. You need to keep this kind of style for a very special kind of day.
